There are currently no international quality indicators (QI) that exist for hepato- pancreatico-biliary (HPB) surgery and often case volume is used as a proxy by both individuals and units. Consequently, there are no clear benchmarks for units, institutions or individual practices to measure against for training accreditation and other purposes.

The 2020 World Congress of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) in Melbourne will provide an opportunity to assemble an international faculty of hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) surgeons and associated specialties to develop internationally accepted QIs for HPB surgery.

This is a chance for the IHBPA to assemble an international faculty of HPB surgeons and associated specialist to develop 8-12 internationally acceptable QI, each for surgery of the gallbladder, liver, pancreas and bile ducts.
